Secretary’s Report

ACTFL Meeting, Nov. 17, 2007

 

The 2007 Annual Meeting of the National Council and Faculty Advisors was held on November 17, 2007 at the Henry B.Gonzales Convention Center in San Antonio, Texas. Present were the National President, John M. Jeep (Miami University of Ohio), the National Secretary-Treasurer, John F. Reynolds (Longwood University), and the National Council members Ronald Horwege, First Vice-President (Sweet Briar College) and James Davidheiser, Second-Vice-President (University of the South). The meeting was held at the end of a sponsored session.

 

President Jeep called the meeting to order at 4:15.

 

The minutes of the 2006 Annual Meeting, held the previous year in Nashville, Tennessee, were approved with one correction. The name of the award received by James Davidheiser the previous year in Nashville was added: Jacqueline Elliot Award for Outstanding Service in Higher Education from the Tennessee Foreign Language Teaching Association (TFLTA).

 

The National Secretary-Treasurer made the following information available:  From Nov. 2006 to the date of the meeting, 107 chapters held at least one initiation (106 in 2006). A total of 847 members were initiated (824 in 2006). The Society has a total of 251 chapters, 169 are active. Three new chapters were added in 2007: Georgia State University in Atlanta (Sigma Beta), the University of Wisconsin at Whitewater (Sigma Delta), and the University of Rhode Island (Sigma Epsilon).

 

The Secretary-Treasurer gave the Treasurer’s Report for information.

 

The Secretary-Treasurer reported on the Invested Funds which are administered by Professor Emeritus, Maurice Conner (Theta Beta chapter).

 

Members of the Scholarship Committee this year were Winnifred Adolph (Florida State University), Al Gurganus (The Citadel), John M. Jeep (Miami University of Ohio), and Michael Shaughnessy (Washington and Jefferson College).

 

Senior Category: There was only one application for the senior category. The application was not funded by the Society.

 

Sophomore/Junior category winter: Julie Sours, Indiana University, Beta Alpha chapter, advisor, Tracy Hall.

 

Runner-up: Heidi Einholz, Drew University, Iota Phi chapter, advisors Edwina Lawler and Elfriede Smith.  

 

Incentive grants:  Two awards of $250 each were made to the following institutions:

University of North Texas, Iota Epsilon chapter, advisor Carmen Terry

University of Arizona, Epsilon Epsilon chapter, advisor Albrecht Classen

 

The next issue of the Delta Phi Alpha Bulletin covering the years 2008-2009 will appear in the spring.

Honor Cords: Delta Phi Alpha offers graduation cords at $10 each including postage.

 

Old Business:

 

  1. Invested Funds:  Professor Maurice Conner has requested that the council find another manager of these funds.  The National Secretary-Treasurer was asked to find a suitable replacement for Professor Conner and to thank him for his many years of service to the Society.

 

New Business:

 

  1. The following motion was made concerning the amount of scholarship awards: Scholarship amounts for both the senior and sophomore/junior categories will be increased by $500 and will remain so as long as Society income allows. The motion passed unanimously.

 

  1. Venue:  It was decided to remain with ACTFL and ask the AATG for one of its slots to hold a session next year in Orlando, Florida.

 

  1. The National Secretary-Treasurer made a motion that Richard Seymour, former long-time National Secretary-Treasurer of the Society be made an honorary member of the National council. The motion passed unanimously.

 

  1. The topic for the next session of Delta Phi Alpha at the next ACTFL meeting was discussed. A possible topic might be the influence of honors programs on honor societies like Delta Phi Alpha.

 

President Jeep thanked the Secretary-Treasurer for his service to the Society.

 

There being no further business, President Jeep adjourned the meeting at 4:57pm.
