DELTA PHI ALPHA

FIRST FALL MAILING 2006

Dear Faculty Advisor:

Welcome back! I hope you had a relaxing summer break, and I hope this year will be a good one for you, your chapter, and for students of German.

1.                  The Delta Phi Alpha Scholarship Information Sheet and Application forms are now available on line at the Delta Phi Alpha website, which can be found at  www.deltaphialpha.org. You may download the application and information sheet and make copies for your students as needed. This office will, in winter or early spring, notify the faculty advisors who recommended candidates of the outcome of the competition. The award in the senior category is $2000; the award in the sophomore/junior category is $1000. Seniors applying for the Delta Phi Alpha award must also apply to the DAAD for an annual award. In order to allow applications for the DAAD award for the senior category to reach the DAAD office in New York on time, the DEADLINE for receipt of completed applications is OCTOBER 27, 2006. Please advise students that letters of recommendation should be requested as soon as possible in order to have them in on time. Students should ask those recommending them to deliver the recommendations to them in a sealed envelop signed across the seal. The applicant can then be sure that all required documents are sent at the same time. A selection committee of three professors will determine the winners of the Delta Phi Alpha scholarships.

2.                  The Annual Meeting of the National Council will be held on Saturday, November 18th during the ACTFL conference in Nashville at the Convention Center. Delta Phi Alpha will sponsor a professional session at that time. All faculty advisors are invited to attend the meeting and those who cannot attend are encouraged to send in suggestions or recommendations to the National Secretary-Treasurer at reynoldsjf@longwood.edu.

3.                  The Chapter Report Form is also available on line at the Delta Phi Alpha website. We will be including information from the Chapter Report Form on the site. There is also the possibility of including photos of chapter events on the website. Photographs should be sent to the Delta Phi Alpha webmaster, Dr. Geoffrey Orth, at Longwood’s Honors Program, or to this office.

4.                  The new issue of the Delta Phi Alpha Bulletin (2006-2007) was printed this spring. Each member of the Society receives a copy of the Bulletin at the initiation ceremony. If your chapter needs additional copies of the Bulletin, please let me know. Any corrections or omissions should be brought to my attention.

5.                  New Faculty Advisors should send their correct title and academic address, including e-mail address, to this office in order to insure prompt receipt of all communications. (reynoldsjf@longwood.edu)

6.                  Certificates: A list of student names, spelled exactly as they are to appear on the membership certificates, should be sent to this office. Printing and mailing of certificates takes between 3-4 weeks after receipt of the $20/student initiation fee. Please note: It is important that only ONE check for the full membership fees, made out to Delta Phi Alpha, be sent to the National Secretary-Treasurer’s office. Checks from individual initiates will be returned.

7.                  Honor Cords: Honor cords for graduating members of Delta Phi Alpha can be ordered from this office at the price of $10 each. Cords can also be ordered in lots of 12 or more directly from Schoen Trimming & Cord Co., Inc., 151 West 25th St., New York, NY 10001 (e-mail: Schoentrims@aol.com). Other jewelry items can be ordered from Master Design, 81 John Dietrich Blvd., P.O. Box 2719, Attleboro Falls, MA 02763 (see last page of the Bulletin for more information).

8.                  The Delta Phi Alpha web site (www.deltaphialpha.org) includes many items to make your work as Faculty Advisor easier. Scholarship Application Forms, Chapter Report Forms, Initiation Ritual, Annual Reports, and all mailings are now available on the site. The Delta Phi Alpha webmaster, Dr. Geoffrey Orth, can be reached at orthgc@longwood.edu.

9.                  If I can assist you in any way in your capacity as Delta Phi Alpha Faculty Advisor, please contact me. It is always a pleasure to hear from you.

 Sincerely,

John F. Reynolds, Delta Phi Alpha

National Secretary-Treasurer
